Ann Nocenti: Daredevil-ist?
Tom,
Right now CBR is running a “Who’s your favorite Daredevil writer?” poll, and Frank Miller is predictably winning. What’s interesting is how diligent Marvel has been in putting out Daredevil collections. Each of the top seven writers has the entirety of his/her run in not just paperback but hardcover—expensive omnibuses, in most cases.Well, six of the top seven. Poor Ann Nocenti.Nocenti is sitting in fifth place at the moment, ahead of Kevin Smith and Stan Lee, despite most of her work only existing in yellowing back issue form. Hers is the greatest Daredevil run (the greatest superhero run, I’d argue) that no one has read.Sure, there are a couple of long out of print paperbacks collecting a small fraction of her work. But given her run’s high esteem (as illuminated by the CBR poll) and the artists she worked with (John Romita Jr., Lee Weeks, Al Williamson, Barry Windsor Smith, Keith Giffen), it’s surprising Marvel hasn’t undertaken a more comprehensive reprinting of her time on the title. But there’s the Netflix Daredevil miniseries coming up. Perhaps the Marvel collection department is already preparing a Nocenti-centric Daredevil Epic volume? Then again, a Daredevil by Nocenti and Romita Jr. omnibus (Daredevil 250-291) sounds utterly perfect.Fingers crossed? Thanks for your time. Best,Dick
This should DEFINITELY happen.
